Merchants have been played in RPGs since before the time of the publication of the frst RPG, D&D. We know with certainty that Dan Nicholson played a character known as “The Merchant of Blackmoor” in Arneson’s Blackmoor campaign, which was the “proto D&D” game. Whether or not this was actually
a “class”, as we now recognize the term, is up for debate. What we do know is that Arneson himself lists the merchant as a class in his book The First Fantasy Campaign. So Dave Arneson himself acknowledged that the class existed, in some form. This zine is an attempt to reconstruct Arneson’s merchant. Rather, the intent is to give an OSE and BX compatible version of the merchant for your own campaign.
